I can't remember how characters names are spelled, etc., etc. In one writing book I read by Orson Scott Card, he suggested keeping a "bible," a notebook to write down all the decisions you make about the story just to keep track of it. I haven't tried it myself, but I might have to now that I am novel-writing in earnest. Short stories don't require remembering quite as much.
